The sun was shining brightly above the Thousand Sunny. Not a single cloud could be found in the vast, blue sky. The Straw-Hat crew were lounging about the ship each doing their own thing. Chopper, the crews reindeer doctor, was drying herbs at the helm of the ship. Usopp, the crews marksman, was helping Franky, the crews shipwright, design some new machinery down below the ship. Nami, the crews navigator, was in the observation room drawing up a map of the lastest island they had visited. Robin, the crews archaeologist, was reading a book inside the aquarium bar. Zoro, the crews swordsman, was training in the crows nest. Sanji, the crews cook, was getting lunch ready in the kitchen. Brook, the crews musician, was playing a soft tune on his violin on the lawn deck. Mel, the newly joined crewmember who was also their singer, was humming softly to herself on top of the Thousand Sunny's figurehead. She was laying on her stomach looking straight down into the deep, blue sea watching small waves crash against the ship.
Everything seemed so calm and peaceful until the door to the men's quarter opened abruptly revealing a tall, lanky teenage boy wearing a straw-hat.
"MEL-CHAN! Are you out here?" asked the black-haired captain enthusiastically.
The soft, brown-haired girl giggled soflty and tried to stay as still as possible behind the figurehead.
When there was no reply from the singer herself, the straw-hat boy ran around the ship looking for the 16-year-old girl who had captured the young captains attention with her angelic voice some months ago.
"Mel-chan why are you always hiding from Luffy?" inquired the young, blue-nosed reindeer from his spot next to his medical plants.
"No reason I just think his reactions are really funny," answered the young girl quietly from her hiding spot.
Chopper smiled and laughed softly at the girl's answer. After several minutes of running in and out of rooms aboard the Sunny, Luffy was getting distressed and frantic about not being able to find his new crew member on his ship.
"Ahhhh! Mel-chan isn't on the ship!! I think she fell overboard!!!!" yelled Luffy in the middle of the lawn deck hopelessly looking around to spot the girl with the adorable baby blue eyes.
Nobody seemed fazed or bothered by their captain's frenzied state. Rather some rolled their eyes or chuckled to themselves from their location as if this was a rather everyday occurrence.
"Yohohohoho~! Luffy-san, Mel-san is behind the firgurehead," said Brook rather amusedly.
"Awww why'd you have to tell him Brook? I wanted to find out what he would do next," whined Mel while popping her head behind Sunny's head.
"Waaahhhh! Mel-chan!!! Your still alive!" exclaimed the elated captain while tears of joy were running down his face and a small snot was hanging down from his nose.
Mel and Chopper laughed heartily looking at the comical scene before them set by their captain.
"Yeah sorry Luffy for not answering you before when you called my name. I just couldn't help myself. I really wanted to see what you would do this time if you found out I wasn't with you guys," Mel told Luffy with a shurg of her shoulders while smiling cutely.
It wasn't the first time Mel hid from her captain. The first time wasn't on purpose though because she really wasn't with the rest of her nakamas when Luffy was looking for her. While they were walking around a big city on an island they had stopped by, Mel froze in front of a pet shop. Not being able to stop or control herself, she had walked straight into the shop, picked up the nearest pet, and cooed about how cute it was. The Straw-Hat crew hadn't noticed their new crew member's disappearance until Luffy, who had ran to the nearest meat stall right before the Thousand Sunny had even docked properly, came running up to his crew with bags of meat that would last a normal person a couple of months to finish. The dark-haired teenager immediately noticed that Mel wasn't with them. When the rest of the crew found out that they had lost one of their youngest crewmember, everyone had instantly went ballistic.
Even though Mel was perfectly capable of taking care of herself, her appearance wasn't one that would go unnoticed. It was one of the many reasons why Luffy had begged for her to join his crew. Mel's appearance wasn't an unusual one in fact it was quite the opppsite actually. She had beautiful light brown hair that went to the middle of her back, a heart-shaped face, small full lips that were a very light pink color, a small nose and lastly her endearing baby blue eyes that could capture anyone's attention including and especially Luffy's. So overall she was absolutely adorable with a capital 'A.' Who knows what sort of danger she could be in with that sort of face in a crowded, dangerous city like this!
When the crew were all somewhat calm, they started to pair up before they separated to go look for their precious nakama.
"Hey where's Luffy?" asked Usopp looking at the bags of meat that were abondoned on the floor.
Apparently while everyone was frantically looking around them to find Mel, Luffy had dropped all his bags of meat and ran toward the direction his crews had just came from. While Mel was looking at all the pets in the store, Luffy was making his way through crowds of people. Soon the straw-hat boy got frustrated at the group of people who were in his way so he stretched his arms above to one of the laundry lines and pulled himself up to see better. When he couldn't find Mel even in his new position, he figured he could get Mel to find him instead.
"MEL-CHAN! MELODY!! NIGHTINGALE D. MELODY!!!!" Luffy yelled from the top of his lungs.
When Mel heard her captain yelling her name, she ran outside of the pet shop and looked around only to find him dangling off of a laundry line. The young singer couldn't hold back her laughter at the sight above her. Even on the way back to the Sunny, Mel was still laughing.
There was another time when Mel wasn't on the ship yet because she went back the grocery store with Sanji to pick up a few more items. When Franky was checking if the helm was working properly, Luffy thought Franky was going to leave without Mel, but instead of asking Franky to wait for Mel Luffy pushed him off the ship. Even though Mel wasn't there to witness the scene herself, she had easily imagined everything when Zoro told her the reason why Franky was chasing Luffy around with a couple of his tools. She giggled uncontrolably this time too.
After a couple of more incidents like these, Mel purposely disappeares on a regular basis now just to see her friend's many ridiculous reactions to her disappearances. This and because deep inside she liked the attention Luffy showed her that he didn't show to the others. It made her feel.....special.
It wasn't the type of feeling that made Mel feel like the best crew member. No, it was a different type of feeling one that she couldn't quite explain or understand. One thing Mel did know for sure was that she would give up anything and everything for Luffy. Monkey D. Luffy the boy who was not only her captain but also her closest, dearest friend.
And maybe someday when she gets older she'll finally understand what the mysterious feeling is but for now she'll just enjoy the life that she's sharing with her crew mates and him.
